Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most sought after destinations for wildlife tourism in South India. Located on the northwestern side of the Nilgiri Hills (Blue Mountains), in Nilgiri district of Indian state of Tamil Nadu, it is also a national park and tiger reserve. Mudumalai, literally means first hills, is one of the first wildlife sanctuaries established in India. This famous wildlife sanctuary of southern India is divided into 5 ranges namely Mudumalai, Kargudi, Masinagudi, Thepakadu and Nellakota.

Mudumalai National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is a haven for royal Bengal tigers, Indian elephants and other threatened species. When you will visit this sanctuary you can easily spot endangered Indian elephants, vulnerable gaur and spotted deer (chitals). This sanctuary is home to about 266 species of birds including critically endangered species like the Indian White-rumped Vulture and the long-billed vulture. This famous wildlife sanctuary or national park or tiger reserve is also under consideration by UNESCO World Heritage Committee for selection as a World Heritage Site.
